Annette Fisher’s Debut book - “Oyinbo : a Foreigner’s Guide to Living in Lagos“!

So this book is targeted not only at Europeans and other Africans who may be visiting Nigeria for the first time, but also to Expatriate Nigerians who may or may not have touched our soil in decades, and who definitely need a refresher course judging by my own experiences having returned to Lagos to live in 2010.

It suddenly came to me to write this book about how to cope when you first arrive in Nigeria. Having been abroad myself for the past 30 years; readjusting to the Nigerian environment was very perplexing, and I thought it must be even more so for foreigners.

So this book is targeted not only at Europeans and other Africans who may be visiting Nigeria for the first time, but also to Expatriate Nigerians who may or may not have touched our soil in decades, and who definitely need a refresher course judging by my own experiences having returned to Lagos to live in 2010.

Even though Nigeria is an English speaking country previously a British Colony the unofficial accepted language is Pidgin English and as such the use and translation of simple English words in Pidgin English differ widely and have meanings that would baffle you...!

Hopefully this book will help to dispel any confusion in communicating locally and make your stay a vibrant, enlightening and enjoyable experience.

Copies are on sale on Amazon and available here

Unionne - a consortium of female-led architects’ practices - are excited to announce that we have been awarded a place on the LHC/ Southwark ADS1.1 framework.

Created by Southwark Council in partnership with LHC, the£400m framework consists of 14 diverse architecture practices that have been appointed to help promote innovation through high-quality, public-sector design across London. These will be added to the original 110 practices appointed by Southwark last year to form one overall framework of 124 practices.

The collective includes Annette Amanda Oyékunlè Fisher of FA Global, former RIBA vice president, presidential candidate and chair of Let’s Build; Teri Okoro of TOCA, Fellow of the RIBA and member of ARB Board; and Sumita Singha OBE of Ecologic Architects, current RIBA Council member and former chair of Architects for Change.

These experienced practitioners are partnered with emerging practices: Cheryl Pilliner-Reeves of PR Architects and TEDI London; Anamaria Pircu of award-winning Vatraa Architecture; and Angelene Clarke of Bearded Ladies- designer and researcher at UCL. We are also delighted to have had the support and mentorship of Scott Brownrigg on the bid.

This exciting assembly of practices was initiated by Annette Fisher prior to January 2021 with a vision to create a virtual large practice to bid for larger and more diverse projects. On behalf of the consortium, Annette Fisher states:

“We want to challenge the smaller residential project typologies generally tackled by women and minorities, to actively change the perspective and make a difference not only in the types of projects, but also the way in which we manage and execute projects”

Unionne’s aim is to collaborate, innovate, celebrate, and promote the advancement of women and minorities in Architecture and to create iconic buildings that celebrate and promote sustainability and diversity. All members of Unionne are driven by a desire to transform access to, and the experience of, the built environment for both the community and professionals.

The founding principles of the collective are:

• Partnering

• Pioneering

• Progressive

Clubhouse 4th June 2021 “The Elephant in the room”

What a riveting discussion about diversity yesterday evening at Global Architecture Alliance with Jason Boyle, Neil Pinder, Marsha Ramroop, Teri Okoro, Femi Oresanya, Amanda Selormey, Jim Rooney and Yogesh Taylor.

How to make uncomfortable discussions about race and inclusion more comfortable ? Added humour, reverse the isms, put the shoe on the other foot, joined up thinking, Marsha’s Cultural Intelligence and more.

It’s coming -an overwhelming collaboration of the underrepresented in construction sweeping the nation with it’s own vibe, network, growth, market, and undeniable cool constructive development sector. Awesome!!!

UNIONNE

All members of UNIONNE Limited are driven by a desire to transform access to, and the experience of, the built environment for both the community and professionals.

Asset 4.png

UNIONNE Limited is an organisation bringing together the collaborative strength of several diverse and female-led architecture practices based in London and beyond. The collective has been established as an informal network for many years. The relationship was formalised in January 2021 as UNIONNE Limited. The collective and complementary knowledge, skills and experience of the group will support the needs of diverse clients and projects and address the lack of access to opportunities for small practitioners in the industry.

All members of UNIONNE Limited are driven by a desire to transform access to, and the experience of, the built environment for both the community and professionals. The founding principles of UNIONNE Limited are:

  1. Partnering

  2. Pioneering

  3. Progressive

These principles inform our shared approach to architecture- both in terms of how we work with our clients and how we generate appropriate architectural solutions. Project and team leadership will be distributed across the collective. This depends on the best fit according to individual expertise and ideas. This also underpins the partnership relationship we have established with Scott Brownrigg - an international collaborative design practice, headquartered in London (www.unionne.co).
